Toys

The aim is to find one off toys of different kinds, which proved to be a major success when launched and will hopefully re inspire the child in all of us as well as being worthwhile investments. Now and again we encounter examples of iconic toys; when they prove irresistible, we add them to our collection and offer them to connoisseurs of the genre.

We currently have two superb vintage “Corgi” classics. Corgi Toys was launched in 1956 and produced die-cast model cars by Mettoy Playcraft Ltd., which was formed in 1936. The new toys were a major success as they were the first to have transparent plastic windows and became known as “the ones with the windows”. Competition came from companies like Dinky. In its first year of trading Corgi sold 2.75 million cars making it the clear market leader and went on to win the Queens Award for Industry in 1966. Sales increased in the late 1960’s with the success of the James Bond model and other TV and film favourites and all was well until a fire destroyed the factory in 1969. Brief success was evident again once the factory was re built with the Queens Silver Jubilee model edition and other nostalgia models but the business waned in 1983 with very poor sales partly as a result of more sophisticated toys being available on the market. Corgi Toys Ltd. was formed in 1984 before Mattel took the company over in 1989 and produced a range of Corgi Classics. Corgi regained its independence in 1995 with the arrival of Corgi Classics Ltd.
