Secondly we have a fabulous, signed oil on board painting from 1955 called “Italian Town, Spring” which beautifully illustrates the diverse capability of Paul Felier. He visited the Italian lakes painting Gandria and Isola Bella as well as Florence and Venice. His Italian paintings highlight his reaction to the Northern Italian Light, which is very different from his Atlantic coastal Cornish paintings in terms of the warm soft hues, which have been used. The painting measures Height 17 7/8ths inches x Width 26 inches (H45.6 cms x W66 cms).
The painting is available £POA subject to prior sale. (Item 142)
Paul Feiler was born in 1918 in Frankfurt. In 1934 he moved to England and studied at the Slade school between 1937 and 1940. On completion of his Art Masters at the combined colleges of Eastbourne and Radley, he began teaching at the West of England College of Art. He became head of painting in 1960 and continued to work there until 1975. Feiler’s work became more abstract in 1950, following his first visit to Cornwall.
In 1953 he bought a chapel at Kerris Paul near Penzance where he lived with his wife, the painter Catherine Armitage. Some of his most important paintings were produced in the 1950’s with a selection of Italian paintings being shown in London at an exhibition in 1956. In 1975 he took over Bryan Wynter’s studio near Paul. Over the years he has exhibited consistently in major galleries in Britain and abroad and was included in the Tate Gallery’s exhibition in 1985: St Ives 1939-64.
His work is held in public collections worldwide including the Tate; the Victoria and Albert Museum; the National Gallery of New Zealand, Wellington and the Gallery of Modern Art, Washington D.C.
