Ever since 1875 the name Liberty & Co has been the given brand name for great design, style and luxury. The company was founded by Arthur Liberty who tirelessly toured the world looking for exciting, individual pieces which would excite and inspire his targeted clientele. Today this tradition lives on in its glorious Tudor building on Regent Street London. When the shop originally opened its doors to the public it sold various items from Japan and the Far East, a range of fabrics and beautiful ornaments designed to grace any well-appointed home. The business quickly expanded from its original premises at 218 Regent Street and acquired properties next door. As the shop developed it increased its range of products and became the most fashionable and iconic shop in London synonymous for its fabrics and in the 1890’s with kindred spirit Edward Goodwin directing the store Arthur Liberty began seeking relationships with many of the most important Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau designers of the period.
As the business expanded in the 1920’s the wonderful Tudor building grew with it and using timbers from HMS Hindustan and HMS Impregnable the frontage at Great Marlborough Street came into being. Liberty & co has always continued its quest to supply exotic and eclectic design and does so to this day with a trip to the store being one of the retail highlights of many a shopper visiting London. Today’s store still retains some of its older features like fireplaces and rooms that give the ambience of a beautiful home.
